Instead of using self-destructive actions to deal with painful emotions, use skills such as distraction, radical acceptance, and pros/cons alternatives. Self-soothe with your five senses, IMPROVE skill (Imagery, Meaning, Prayer, Relaxation, One thing at a time, Vacation, Encouragement) and ACCEPTS skill (Activities, Contributing, Comparisons, Emotions (opposite), Push Away, Thoughts, Sensations).
